My name is Kelly Ebbels, and I am a journalist, writer, editor and researcher living in Montreal, Quebec. I grew up on both sides of the Canada-United States border, and this North American experience informs my work and my thinking. My journalistic goals include exploring place, both in examining the physical world, and also the political landscapes that stretch across, and in spite of, established borders.
I have penned award-winning work as a reporter at The Ridgewood News and at the Glen Rock Gazette in New Jersey. While studying history and politics at McGill University in Montreal, I wrote and edited news at the independent student newspaper, The McGill Daily. I have interned at Photo District News in New York, written for the MediaScout-Canada news analysis digest, blogged about cycling for The Montreal Gazette, contributed to magazines such as Montreal en santé and 201 Health, assisted in research for author Caitlin Kelly, and written for various Patch websites. I am nominated for a National Magazine Award in Canada for my work in Maisonneuve magazine. You can read about other accolades of mine here.
I am a versatile writer, particularly strong in features. I consider myself a generalist, and all human experience and knowledge interests me, from science and health to current political movements. It is my passion to explore such subjects through the journalistic process.
I believe journalists, like all people, have a responsibility to seek truth, speak honestly, and strive for fairness. I have an interest in moving our dialogues forward, and upward, as we face a multitude of challenges at this juncture in history.
